The Influence of Our Friendships

By Dan Nelson, April 24, 2025

Proverbs 22:24-25 warns us, “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.” This verse highlights an important truth—our relationships shape who we become.

The people we surround ourselves with have a direct impact on our character, values, and choices. Just as wise and godly friends encourage us to grow in righteousness, negative influences can lead us down a path of frustration, conflict, and poor decision-making. Proverbs warns that spending time with those who are quick to anger can cause us to adopt their ways, trapping us in harmful patterns of behavior.

Friendships are a gift from God, but they also require discernment. Choosing to walk alongside those who reflect wisdom, integrity, and kindness strengthens our own faith and helps us live in alignment with God’s will. When we build relationships with those who seek righteousness, we find encouragement, accountability, and the blessing of shared spiritual growth.

Today, let’s evaluate the friendships in our lives. Are we surrounding ourselves with people who lead us closer to God, or are we allowing negative influences to shape our attitudes and actions? Let’s ask God to help us cultivate relationships that promote wisdom, peace, and righteousness.
