The Influence of Our Companions

By Dan Nelson, February 6, 2025

Proverbs 13:20 reminds us, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” This verse highlights the profound influence that our relationships have on our lives. The people we spend time with shape our thinking, our decisions, and ultimately, our character.

Wisdom is not gained in isolation; it is cultivated in the company of those who seek truth and live according to God’s ways. When we surround ourselves with godly mentors, faithful friends, and those who encourage us in righteousness, we naturally grow in wisdom. On the other hand, walking with those who make unwise choices can lead us down a path of trouble and regret.

Choosing wise companions requires intentionality. It means seeking relationships that challenge us to grow spiritually, encourage us in our faith, and hold us accountable to God’s truth. While we are called to love and minister to all, we must be mindful of who influences our hearts and minds the most.

Take a moment today to reflect on your relationships. Are you surrounding yourself with people who help you grow in wisdom? If not, seek out those who will inspire and encourage you toward godly living. The company you keep will either draw you closer to wisdom or pull you away from it—choose wisely.
